Noo Cheng Adam Road Prawn Mee

We ended our food trip at Zion Food Centre with Noo Cheng Adam Road Prawn Noodle! I fell in love with their prawn Noodle when Makan Boy first brought me to try it at their Clementi outlet - which they closed about a month ago due to shortage in manpower.

Stallfront
Highly recommended.. indeed!
Yes that's the boss smiling =D
Big Prawn Noodle ($8)
We decided to go big and ordered the $8 prawn noodle which has 5 king size prawns and the soup is still as heavenly and great. Can't stop drinking it!

The prawns may be bigger but considering how there's not much of a difference in the freshness and texture of the prawn, I think the $5 serving is good enough. Save that $3 can buy another plate of Fried Kway Teow a few stalls away muahahaha!

Xin Fei Fei Wanton Mee

When there is a long queue for a stall, it always stirs interest in me and Makan Boy to check the stall out. Naturally, we will be asking "Wa, is this stall also famous and very good?". Naturally, the next thing we will say is "Try already then will know lor".

That's what food adventure is all about so we bought what many were queuing to buy muahaha.

We observed that their queue didn't stop for at least 1 hour.
There wasn't any accolades or testimonial on their stallfront so what's great about their Wanton mee that got so many people queuing?

They sell satay as well. Mmm..
Wanton Mee ($3)
The moment I tried to stir the noodles, I could instantly tell something's not right. It was too dry for me to mix! When I tried to slurp the noodles it was like trying to slurp fried beehoon. In fact I think fried beehoon also easier to slurp lol.

Ingredients were good
However, the fried dumpling is very crispy and the meat fillings were tasty. Char siew was thick, tender and sweet! Enjoyed it! The soup might be fully loaded with MSG but at least it tasted good with the dumplings.

If the noodles had been wetter, I'm sure it is very much worth the queue. Somemore, $3 very good value! Maybe this time round, they miss one round of sauce.. No harm having it again on my next visit!

Chong Pang Huat

Putting away the calorie and cholesterol calculator, Makan Boy and I continued indulging ourselves with yummy food at Zion Food Centre!

Chong Pang Huat Chicken Wings and Satay
Just beside the Fried Kway Teow stall, this is the true No.18 stall. Since their signature is their chicken wings, we decided to skip the satay.

Golden and tempting me
Oh me.. bliss.
On its own, the chicken wing is great. Fragrant, hot and very appetizing. With the chili, it is good. With the lime, it is heavenly!

I mean, who can resist barbequed shiny crispy chicken wings that is juicy at the same time? So good I tell you.

No. 18 Fried Kway Teow

The next few posts will be from our food trip to Zion Riverside food centre!

Pretty chill
<3
Long queue during lunch hour
Accolades are proof of the goodness in his Fried Kway Teow!
Very clean and simple stall front
Although the boss fry upon order, the queue was cleared pretty fast!

Zion Road Fried Kway Teow ($3)
This is one of the best Fried Kway Teow I have eaten in Singapore! It has all the essential ingredients to a great Fried Kway Teow like lard, fish cake, lap cheong, cockles and egg which is altogether sinful but oh so tasty and fragrant! Kept on going till it was swept clean from the plate!

For $3, this is one great value must return-for-more and must-eat Fried Kway Teow in Singapore!!

Amici

Amici has a nice decor, open concept kitchen and a romantic setting especially at the back of the restaurant. Been here for the third time and from past visits, their service can be grumpy auntie or nice lady/gentleman. The lightings are really dim so if you want some cosy time together this is a lovely place to dine and relax.

Nice setting
Toasted basket of garlic bread - 8pcs ($7.90)
Escargot - one dozen ($23.90)
We started with some garlic bread as well as escargot and as disgusted the birthday girl was when we talked about eating oven baked snails with garlic butter, she managed to get herself together and took one small bite of the snail when it was served! =D

Special tong and fork for the snail
Garlic bread was good and if you haven't tried snails before, their texture is pretty similar to clams except it is more tender. I personally would have added more salt since the snails itself doesn't have much taste.

Seafood risotto di mare ($28.90)
Seafood with italian rice in roma tomatoes was alright. Thought the rice can be cooked slightly longer but glad that they were not stingy with the seafood.

Gamberi al sugo di pomodoro ($27.90)
The crayfish and mixed seafood pasta with chef spicy tomato sauce was nothing much to rave about. Safe choice but not very exciting in taste.

Nero di calamari e merluzzo ($26.90)
Pasta with squid ink and fried cod is not bad. I like their fried cod which is crispy and smooth on the inside. Couldn't really taste anything special with the squid ink pasta but was entertained with the visible change in colour of the teeth. Hehe..

Fettuccine alla russa ($20.90)
The pasta with smoked salmon & caviar served in vodka cream is probably the best of the night. Really special sauce which taste superb with the salmon and really well cooked fettuccine pasta.

Grilled beef tenderloin - 200gm ($39.90)
Nice..
I chosed the summer truffles in madeira sauce for the tenderloin and it tasted ordinary to me. Totally didn't feel my money's worth for 200gm of this tenderloin as the texture was comparable to any good rib eye steak. The only positive comment would be that the doneness of the steak was right.

With macarons!
<3
We finished the dinner with a birthday cake from Amici. Really thick and chocolatey which I enjoyed very much! Another must try dessert at Amici is their Tiramisu! I had that in Amici Bangkok as well and I have to say their Tiramisu is one of the best so far!

If you have that promotion voucher they always sell, I would say it's really worth the buy for a dinner here. Otherwise, I feel that Amici is overpriced for their food. Oh and apart from the smoke and oil, I do enjoy whiffs of aroma from their open kitchen.

Bismillah Biryani Restaurant

With a huge banner and signboard that boasts "Singapore's Best Dum Biryani", Bismillah Biryani was however, especially quiet when we walked in at around 8pm on a Monday evening.

Front and side view of the restaurant
A really flattering review from an authentic customer..
I really like the bold red colour.
Nice. But..
It's nice to know that they think making money is less important than the taste of the food and the health of the customers, but their biryani and drinks are not cheap at all leh...

Papadum and the awesome mint yoghurt sauce!
We were served papadums with this mint yoghurt sauce shortly after we ordered the biryani. The papadum tasted great as there was no overdose of the spices and it was really thin and crispy. But it's better to finish this fast as it got soft and soggy after half an hour (must be the humidity in the air).

Love this!
I really enjoyed the flavour and refreshing taste of this uplifting and yummy sauce so I asked the boss about it and got to know it's a mint yoghurt sauce with coriander and some chilli added.

Teh Tarik ($1.50) & Iced Teh Tarik ($2.50)
I was surprised at the the huge difference in the colour of the tea when they served it to us but both hot and cold version tasted good.

Dum Mutton Biryani ($9)
Really long grains of rice!
The first thing we noticed were the very long grains of rice. They use Basmati Rice which is more expensive and supposedly to have a better fragrance when cooked. To be honest, I really couldn't taste the difference as I'm not an expert in biryani. However, the mutton was really fragrant, tender and flavourful which I enjoyed eating. It would have been a perfect biryani for me if the rice were wetter and the curry less spicy though. Makan Boy and I found it hard to fully appreciate the dish because we were constantly going "Urghh.. spicy!!!" *Gulps Teh Tarik*.

I believe they justify their plate of biryani fit to sell at $9/plate because of the rice they use, but I certainly didn't feel my money's worth in making a trip down the next time round except for maybe the mint yoghurt sauce and the mutton?

Lao Huo Tang (King of Soups)

Occupying 3 stallfronts, Lao Huo Tang is definitely eye-catching!

3 Stallfronts!
With 10 soups to choose from, Lao Huo Tang's USP is that they boil their soups over charcoal fire. I'm not sure about how the soup in the pot recognize the difference in the flame (gas or coal) but it definitely bring back memories for many of the happy age customers when we were there. Sometimes, nolstagia sells!

A team of only uncles at the pots!
It's nice to see uncles in a team so coordinated wearing bright red shirt altogether. Their business was doing great with the constant flow of customers and waiting time is really short.

Buddha Jumps Over The Wall ($6.50)
I've only tried Buddha Jumps Over The Wall once during my grandma's birthday at this chinese restaurant. Was a really long time ago but I remember it as a super expensive ($1000++) delicious herbal super tonic with all the expensive premium ingredients you can think of like sharks fin, abalone, fish maw, scallops, sea cucumber and etc. They also pour chicken essence in when about to serve!

The fish maws and fake abalones.
The masters of soup at Lao Huo Tang did a pretty much similar version except of course - the price! Love the fish maws, their gesture to put in fake abalone and no there wasn't any fake sharks fin but it's totally fine with me. Their soup is fragrant, rich, thick, really flavourful and slightly saltish. They probably added a little starch to give the soup a heavier texture.

Humongous mushroom that is thick and juicy!
Dried Oyster
All that being said, the soup tasted awesome. Spoon after spoon.. I can't stop! Would definitely try their other soups in the future!

Fortune Food

When I used to work in Chinatown area, I love getting a springroll a.k.a Popiah, from Fortune Food.

Fortune Food Stallfront
Their popiah consists of mainly grated, steamed or stir-fried turnip/jicama (known locally as bangkuang) combined with other ingredients suchs as bean sprouts, carrot, minced garlic, grated peanuts, eggs, shredded cucumber and coriander leaves. It is wrapped in a soft, thin paper-like crepe made from wheat flour along with some sweet sauce.

Some outlets I've been to uses lettuce and other variations of popiah may include pork, chinese sausage, tofu, shallots, shrimp or crab meat.

Springroll ($1.30)
I really enjoy their popiah because it's not too wet or dry and thanks to a good addition of shredded cucumber, each bite is always refreshing and tasty.

Don't play play! Got photo with former president ok!
They have outlets across the island and they do sell Cuttlefish Kangkong as well as DIY Popiah Party Sets! If you intend to hold a high tea session or have no idea what to bring for potluck or gatherings, why not roll popiahs together? I'm sure it will be great fun for adults or kids! =D

Bangkok with BFF

Super outdated post but two months ago when the flood situation in Bangkok weren't as bad, BFF and I went to the land of smiles for shopping, food and repeat!

Tuk tuk rides compulsory! Ever so exhilarating!
Tuk tuk rides are forever so fun! Can't deny that at times I wish the driver would slow down though!

One of the best fashion malls for wholesale purchases!
Spent most of my moolah in Platinum.

Really packed in Platinum's foodcourt during lunch hours
Because it was a weekend when we went, the crowd at Platinum was crazy. We had to squeeze through the lanes of shops and mountains of clothes all around. When we went up to their food court, we decided we shall just order KFC.

Familiar food - KFC!
When we continued our night shopping at the Siam Square night market, we were truly tested on our leg power and energy level. Phew!

More shopping at Siam Square night market
But yes I love shopping in Bangkok. I must say the people there aren't as easy to bargain with compared to the last time I went - 5 years ago.

BFF and I had most of our meals at Siam Paragon which was just 5 mins away from our hotel! Furthermore, Siam Paragon is awesome. There are plenty and plenty of outlets, stalls, restaurants, cafes and options to choose from that we both were going like: "Let's try this.. eh no.. Let's try that! Or.. how about this later?!"

Most popular award goes to them
I had never tried Krispy Kreme before and was quite determined to lay my hands on their donuts but their Krispy Kreme had like the longest queue in the whole mall! Didn't wish to queue just for a few donuts so I missed the chance to try it!

Food court serving local delicacies.
3 choices of seafood for their Fried Omelette
Similar to Singapore's Fried Omelette, the Thais have the extra options of Mussels and Prawns to choose from. We ordered one Fried Mussel and one Fried Oyster but to our disappointment, their omelette is far more sticky than Singapore's one. Vegetables are essential in their dishes so their omelette had a huge pile of bean sprouts underneath!

Fried Mussel (85B)
Spot the miserably small orange mussel.. =(
Fried Oyster (85B)
Their Fried Oyster taste better than their Fried Mussel though.

Glass Noodles Pad Thai with Prawns (80B)
I like the sweet and sour Pad Thai! However, the prawns were too "powdery" for my liking.

Mangoes!
The Thais have like plenty of Mangoes! ENVY. Everywhere we walk we see Mango Sticky Rice available! And it's so affordable to gorge on mangoes in Thailand! Same standard in the mangoes no matter which stall we buy from! Super uber sweet! Got to love them for this!

Mango Sticky Rice (75B)
Salty coconut sauce and very sweet mango. Their rice is also just nice although my personal preference would be to add more sugar for the rice hehe!

Fried Noodles and Pork in Sticky Gravy Sauce (75B)
Really sticky but it was yummy!
Great papaya salad! (60B)
Fell in love with their dried prawns!
Their Papaya Salad was done really well. Tasty, refreshing and crunchy! Totally enjoyed this especially after all the oily food.

A few tanks like these in the middle of the food court.
This is a weird concept for me. Watching big white fishes while eating or drinking? Wouldn't it be even more weird if you happen to be eating fish on your plate as well? =/

Walking out of the food court, there are plenty of outlets selling drinks and small bites like Hokkaido.

Colourful flavours of Hokkaido Milk
"The Best Fresh, The Best Milk".
Hokkaido Milk (45B) and Matcha Green Tea Pudding (35B)
Disappointed because the Hokkaido Milk taste exactly like Marigold Milk. When BFF and I took a sip each, we stared at each other blankly for a second LOL.

Matcha Green Tea Milk and Chocolate Pudding
Happier with Matcha Green Tea Milk. At least Marigold hasn't got Green Tea flavour yet.

Really smooth!
Their pudding is a great treat. Tasted really light and texture was smooth and silky. I prefer Chocolate while BFF is a fan of Matcha Green Tea.

Moving on, the food options at the local street food corner is really interesting!

So cute!!
Didn't try this but it is called Thai Donut! Anyone tried this before?

Sorry for the blur quality but look at HOW BIG the pot is!!
Chiang Mai Sausage (40B)
Really spicy and tasted sour too! =X
I couldn't finish this Chiang Mai sausage. The taste after one bite awoke my nervous system hahaha! It was so very spicy!! It's almost like Tom Yum sausage but not exactly like Tom Yum..
Chef taking our order of Fried Sun-Dried Pork! (45B/100g)
The pork was really tasty!
Spicy Mango Salad with Peanuts & Dried Shrimp & Crab (60B)
Super salty fermented crab that kinda spoilt the whole salad.
Glass Noodle Sausage and Pork Sausage with Garlic (15B for each flavour)
Glass Noodle Sausage (15B)
The glass noodle sausage was kinda special but overall their sausages weren't fantastic. German sausages FTW!

What is W-SHAPED pupils??
Mango Sticky Rice again!
Lovely
Another reason why I love Siam Paragon is because they have so many fine dining restaurants and cafes that serves fancy desserts. BFF and I hopped to a total of 3 restaurants just for desserts!

First, we went to Mandarin Oriental Shop.

Mandarin Oriental Shop

Mandarin Oriental has a bright and classy ambience. Love the pretty chandeliers!!

Chef's work desk?
In the middle of the restaurant, I believe this is the area for chefs to work their magic as well as for everyone to watch. (Since there are bar seats around the glass panel on the other side of where I stood to take this photo.)

I went crazy when I saw the lines of desserts all looking delicate and really pretty. Totally hit my weak spot!

OMGGGG
My order in process! Weeeee!!
Soft Chocolate Raspberry Macaroon (125B)
Half gone.
I love macaroons to infinity and beyond. One is always not enough and look at theirs that is palm size big! OMIGUSH. Imagine my hyper happy mood. The shell was done really well being crispy outside and totally soft and crumbly as you bite.. The creme was perfect. I love that their proportion of chocolate creme is more than the slightly sourish raspberry! Well balanced!

Opera (105B)
BFF got Opera which is very rich and thick. Plus we both like coffee so we thoroughly enjoyed this! Hopefully one day I can eat the Dalloyau Opera Cake and of course Laduree Macaroons..

Mandarin Oriental Shop charges a 10% Service Charge.

Next, we walked into Lenotre just opposite!

Lenotre
Interesting Eiffel Towers
The huge contrast between Mandarin Oriental and Lenotre is the lightings. The transition from Mandarin Oriental to Lenotre is almost like day to night. This place is great for a good session of dinner and drinks along with their pastries or dessert.

Presentation not as neat
Schuss (130B)
Light and fluffy texture!
BFF's Schuss had a top layer of strawberry paste, very light cream cheese filling and fluffy sponge cake. The texture of the cake is pretty smooth and the cream kinda melts in your mouth. Almost like the strawberry shortcake we have at Four Leaves.

Volute (140B)
Super thick and rich chocolate
I dig chocolate so I couldn't resist this shiny ball of dark chocolate. The texture of the cake and cream is so dense I can imagine friends of mine who don't like rich cakes frowning. But if you especially love chocolate like me, this can't go wrong.

Lenotre charges a 10% service charge.

We then ended our last night in Bangkok at Amici!

Similar open concept
Unlike Amici Singapore which has the chefs cooking in full view (which I always enjoy watching), theirs is just of the pasta chef rolling the dough. They have another level but when we asked for a seat up there, the manager said it was closed for an event.

Really comfortable setting
The seats at Amici are so comfortable.. Plenty of cushions for you to hug and rest on.

Berry Smoothie and Dragon Zu (120B each)
The smoothies weren't nice. An extra 30B was charged for warm water too. =/

Baked Custard (140B)
Nothing special but I enjoyed the smooth sweet custard along with the caramel sauce and almond flakes.

Tiramisu (140B)
Tiramisu from Amici a must have! Not too sweet and the coffee or alcohol wasn't overpowering too.

Amici charges a 10% service charge and 7% tax.

***

At the airport waiting for our flight home, we walked around and saw that there was Mango Sticky Rice too!

More expensive but oh well..
A sweet ending for the wonderful memories in Bangkok

The next time I'm in Thailand, I shall visit the Tiger Temple and here's hoping that the flood situation will improve soon.
